There has been some confusion as to how the 1M coupe’s M-Drive and MDM are triggered, and whether that changes with iDrive or not. We have put together a primer on how they work exactly and what the buttons accomplish respectively.
Unlike the M3 and M5/6, the M-button on the steering wheel (red circle) is not programmable. It’s always set to trigger a sharper throttle response mapping (comparable to the POWER button in the E9x M3), and nothing else.

Skiddmark has shared this great in studio video of the 1M coupe, featuring a live rotating view of the 1M as well as some motor revving action! Video inside – listen to the 1M being revved at 1:52 and 4:12 marks of the video.
The 1 series M coupe is said to complete the Nurbrugring lap in 8:12. For comparison, this is 10 seconds faster than E46 M3, same time as Z4 M-coupe, 7 seconds slower than the E90/E92 M3, and 22 seconds slower than the E46 M3 CSL.
BMW has posted a useful comparison chart of the 1M coupe versus the Audi TT-RS and Cayman S which shows that the 1M stacks up favorably against two cars which are significantly more expensive in price (both nearly $20k higher in price). The 1-series M coupe ties the TT-RS for highest horsepower, and leads in the torque and power-to-weight ratio categories. Check out the full comparison inside.
Talk of next 1-series M already?! Now that the 1M has been revealed, Scott26 has already turned to talk of the future of the 1M (or M2 as it may be called), as well as the M-Division’s future, which may bring more track/performance focused 1M and M3 special models, as well as potential Z4M and X3M models!
The 1 series M coupe color we have seen throughout BMW’s marketing teasers and the official release info is Valencia Orange. It’s certainly attention grabbing, if not also somewhat polarizing. The other two colors currently offered is Alpine White and Black Sapphire Metallic, which can be seen currently on BMW’s visualizer, as well as these great renders by a Bimmerpost member.
