The guys at BMWBLOG were at Spartanburg and had taken a deeper look at the 5 Series GT while they were there and share their opinions
What we’ve learned in the past few years and after many new product launches was that some cars are really meant to be seen in person before any judgment can be passed on and the 5 GT certainly falls within that category. Most likely this is the reason why BMW North America has decided to take this interesting approach of introducing a new car to the journalists or even better said: giving us a sneak peak of what to expect since the model displayed in Spartanburg was not yet production ready.

Look at how useless that rear window is. The blind spots in this thing are going to be ridiculous. 5GT=*FAIL*

It definitely will, and probably standard on it (at least the beepers..) I wasn't judging the car; just thought the tiny would was funny.

aren't many cars these days with rakish rooflines that have useable rear windows.

I applaud them for being as open minded about the car as they are... or maybe I give them a thumbs down for being far enough up BMW's ass that they are trying to help explain what this car is supposed to be and why we should like it.
IMO when you get into a small enough niche that you have to explain what the car is for you don't really need to make that car.
Next it will be "We designed this car for the consumer who likes to drive mostly at night in the mountains with just his dog. Notice the night vision all the way around the car and the front passenger seat is actually a kennel that has a hydraulic ram to elevate Spot up to where he can see once loaded into vehicle. There is also a water dispenser in the dash so, your dog can drink while you drive"
I still just don't get it. Maybe that will change when I see it in person. IDK.

+1, this car fails on MANY levels and look at the rear seats, there is NO way you can squash a 3rd person in there. i just see a LOT of empty space in the rear and those seats look like a wheelchair, not feeling it at all.

I believe that's the luxury rear seating option, made to seat only 4. The non luxury seating may be a bit better for 5.

It won't stand a chance against the panamera, which beats the M5 in driving dynamics but just as awkward. The 5GT reminds me of a giant prius. Toyota should jump on the bandwagon to rebadge the prius as lexus, add some plush material and call it Prius GT
