As the 2012 DTM season enters the finishing straight, BMW Motorsport is already on course for next year: As of 2013, four BMW teams will do battle for points and victories in the popular touring car series. Like BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG, newly-formed BMW Team MTEK will also run two BMW M3 DTMs.

The BMW Group and Local Motors will jointly launch a first-of-its kind ideas competition intended to identify vehicle features and functions that will define the urban driving experience in the year 2025. In a project that will see the BMW Group tap into the global know-how of Local Motors online community of more than 20,000 members, the aim of this collaboration is to glean new inspiration and broader perspectives for future mobility solutions.

The BMW “Urban Driving Experience Challenge”, powered by the Forge at Local Motors, will be a two-phase challenge that engages participants in the a forward-focused challenge specifically targeted to providing next-generation driving solutions to the world’s growing urban populations, and the challenges that are unique to these megacity environments. Here is a report from the 2012 BMW M6 M Power Experience at the Yas Marina Formula 1 race circuit in Abu Dhabi, courtesy of BIMMERPOST member willaw.

This year’s M Power Experience event took place in Abu Dhabi, where the program was principally held at the Yas Marina Formula 1 race track. Last year’s M Power Experience in Spain focused on the F10 M5, and this year’s Abu Dhabi event will featured the new M6 coupe and M6 convertible. There were also excursions into the desert to test BMW M SAV vehicles.

With F30 3 series deliveries chugging along, it was only a matter of time before our members started gathering with their F30s.

This weekend saw our Toronto area members gather for the first substantial F30 meet, with 9 owners making it out with their F30 models of all different varieties and colors.

24 F10 M5s were delivered on Saturday, September 1 via European Delivery at the BMW Welt. 22 of the deliveries were to M5POST members and BMW TV was on hand to cover this remarkable delivery day.

Recall the stolen 1M coupe video and rash of stolen BMWs in the UK that we reported on in July? BMW has begun releasing fixes to prevent the high tech thefts which used a method of cloning keys on the spot (by NFC key programming devices). In short, the car thieves broke into the car, accessed the BMW OBD port, and programmed a blank NFC key via a key programmer.

Models produced from 2007 to September 2011 are vulnerable to process, but BMW has just released a software upgrade for affected X5 and X6 models. Software updates for other affected models will be available in approximately 8 weeks.

Many BMW fans are also big fans of Apple products, but this is combining the two interests and taking it oh perhaps just a little bit too far.

On September 6th at approximately 5am, a Los Angeles man and his cohorts were caught on camera off-roading their 2003 X5 SUV straight into (and past the glass and metal security gate of) an Apple store in Temecula where they attempted to burglarize the store.

Unfortunately for them, the metal security gate dropped down after the car’s entry and they had quite some fun testing the X5’s power while trying to get back out.

The accused man is being held on $600,000 bail, which is the estimated damage to the Apple Store, authorities said. He is charged with vandalism, burglary and … CONTINUED

BMW M cars may have staked their reputation on their handling and overall performance package, but with the forced induction trend of the latest M models, they’ve become quite the straight-line monsters.

The 2013 F10 M5 with its S63Tu engine is rated at 560hp from the factory, but dynos have confirmed that this is a significantly underrated power figure. This has now also been borne out at the track.

M5POST member 2013awm5 took his M5 to the track and produced a very impressive quarter mile top run time of 11.78 @ 119mph! This was achieved with launch control and no modifications to the car.
