The G30 5 Series sedan has hit the Nurburgring for the first time and we’ve got photos. It’s also dropped a bit of camouflage compared to the first spotted prototypes.
The G30 5 Series prototype has been spotted out testing and being evaluated against the current F10 5 Series. While the exterior size look similar, the platform underneath will be totally new — based on the modular CLAR platform (Cluster Architecture) which will also underpin the next 3, 5, and 6 Series, as well as the next the X3, X4, X5, X6 and X7.

The G30 sedan spied here is the 530eDrive hybrid plug-in model, which reflects BMW’s plans to offer a hybrid version of each of its core models. We can expect the hybrid powerplant to be similar to the 3 Series hybrid plug-in discussed by BMW last week. That means a battery between the trunk and passenger cabin which propels an electric motor contained within the CVT transmission casing. It will cover up to 20 miles on solely electric power.

We’ve seen the next (G30) generation 5 Series touring out on the public roads before, but the prototype has now ratcheted up its testing by taking to the Nurburgring.
At this early stage of testing with heavy camouflage, it’s hard to discern much of the exterior and interior design. But, the front grilles are now semi-visible and the hood cutline appears to have shifted to meet the kidney grilles, just as on the next generation G11 7 Series.

G30 the BMW
Yes, we are already entering the G chassis realm, having very swiftly passed through the F series cars. The current BMW 5-Series is the F10 and the upcoming next generation 5-Series will be the G30.
According to Car Magazine’s sources, BMWs next generation platform is called 35up. What it basicly means is that everything from the 3-series/5-series and up will be based on this shared super platform. Autobild is reporting that the next generation 2017 BMW 5 Series will add a 3 cylinder turbodiesel model in certain markets.
The 3 cylinder turbodiesel 5 Series is rumored to output 150 HP (110 kW) and sip diesel at just 3.9 liters / 100 km (60 MPG US / 72 MPG UK). The next gen 5 Series will ride on a new platform which it will share with the next gen 6 Series and 7 Series.

The LCI refresh model for the current F07/F10/F11 5 Series begins production this month, but BMW has already begun testing the next generation 5 Series. We’ve spotted the next gen 5 Series Touring here.
The next 5 Series is said to be shedding some weight, hopefully by way of the carbon fiber technologies which the next generation G11 7 Series will receive.

The current F10 5 Series just arrived on the market in March 2010, but work has already started at BMW for the next generation 5 Series, which should come as a 2017 model.
According to BMW insider Scott26:
The next generation 5er is as I understand going through the motions of design process at the moment so they cannot give a concrete conclusion as we are still some time off from final design freeze , or the final car that will be chosen for production.
