The top luxury brands are increasing the incentives/discounts on older models in their battle for the top U.S. sales leader. According to data researcher Autodata Corp., BMW has increased incentives 6.9 percent this year, while Mercedes Benz raised discounts 11 percent and Lexus boosted discounts by a whopping 54 percent.
For the year, BMW trails sales leader Mercedes by less than 2,000 cars sold (through May), and leads Lexus by over 16,000 units sold. All three manufacturers’ sales have outpaced the U.S. light vehicle market’s 13 percent gain for the year. BMW year over year sales are up 14 percent through May.

BMW Group sales recorded solid growth once again in May. With 156,957 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles delivered worldwide (prev. yr. 147,565 / +6.4%), the BMW Group achieved its best-ever May sales result. A total of 728,029 (prev. yr. 667,523 / +9.1%) vehicles have been delivered to customers since the start of the year, exceeding the previous year’s first five months by more than 60,000 units.

Yet another accolade for BMW. The image consulting firm, Reputation Institute, has released its RepTrack 2012, their annual reputation survey, and BMW is this year’s world’s most reputable company. The company moved up from its 4th place ranking in last year’s survey.
BMW scored a total of 80.08 % with second-placed Sony and third-placed Walt Disney scoring 79.31 % and 78.92 %, respectively. Second best automotive company was Daimler at 4th place (78.54%) while VW is ranked 8th (77.04%).

The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported May sales of 28,321 vehicles, an increase of 7.1 percent from the 26,452 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group is up 12.2% on sales of 130,843 in the first five months of 2012 compared to 116,656 in the same period in 2011.
Karim Habib will take over as Head of BMW Design on 01.06.2012. The 42-year-old Lebanon-born Canadian has been in charge of Exterior Design BMW Automobiles since March 2011. He joined the BMW Group design team in 1998 and, among other achievements, shaped the design of the current BMW 7 Series.
Following his studies in Canada and California, Karim Habib had various posts in interior and exterior design before becoming Team Leader Advanced Design for the BMW Group and later heading the BMW Exterior Design department. According to the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study by market research company Millward Brown, BMW is now the world’s most valuable automotive brand, replacing Toyota at the top of the list. However, this isn’t BMW’s first time in the study’s top spot, which it also claimed in 2010.
How has BMW managed to be named most valuable auto brand again? According to Peter Walshe, Millward Brown global brand director, “BMW has been able to effectively communicate what sets it apart from other carmakers, while backing up its message with a “very decent product. As one of the great brands in the world, BMW has been absolutely consistent in the long-term regarding what is meaningfully different about their brand, in highly competitive market places.”

According to Reuters and Automobil Produktion (a German industry newsletter), BMW and Hyundai officials recently met in Munich over potential collaboration on “engine development.”
