BMW Group remains on successful course in second quarter


- New record figures for sales volume and revenues
- Second-best quarterly earnings in the company’s history
- Profit before financial result amounts to € 2.27 billion
- Automotive Segment second-quarter EBIT margin of 11.6%
- BMW Group reaffirms targets for financial year 2012

Munich. The BMW Group continued its success during the second quarter as well as in the six-month period to June 2012, achieving new record figures for sales volume and revenues and the second-best Group operating profit in the company’s history.

Second-quarter revenues rose by 7.3% to € 19,202 million (2011: € 17,888 million). Group earnings remained at a high level despite greater investment in new technologies and higher personnel costs: Profit before financial result (EBIT) amounted to € 2,270 million … CONTINUED

BMW On Demand, the hourly (or daily/weekly) rental program currently available in Europe (see model selection), is crossing the Atlantic to the U.S.

The service will begin in NYC (Manhattan) where folks will be able to rent cars from participating dealerships. BMW of Manhattan will be the first (and pilot) dealership and will have approximately 100 328i sedans available. More models should become available later. In Europe, the range of vehicles available covers the whole BMW models gamut, from hatchbacks to convertibles, sedans, SAVs and M cars. Conceived by an award-winning British architecture firm, the BMW Group Pavilion represents a significant architectural addition to the Olympic Park, showing an exciting range of the company’s latest vehicles against the backdrop of the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre. Just a bit over 15 months after announcing their joint venture (BMW Peugeot Citroën Electrification (BPCE)) on developing hybrid and electric vehicle technologies, BMW and Citroen are in talks to break up the partnership, reports Bloomberg News.

BMW spokeswoman Micaela Sandstede told Bloomberg News that BMW is looking to take over the operations of the BMW Peugeot Citroen Electrification partnership.

“Whether that means the joint venture’s employees move to BMW is undecided,” she said. “We are still in discussions with PSA over the dismantling of the joint venture.”

The joint venture BPCE currently includes an R&D center in Munich and a manufacturing facility in Mulhouse, France, which employs 250 workers who are supposed to electrify around 10,000 vehicles starting from 2015.

The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported June sales of 27,720 vehicles, an increase of 3.2 percent from the 26,865 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group is up 10.5 percent on sales of 158,563 in the first six months of 2012 compared to 143,521 in the same period in 2011.

“The June numbers continue the solid, consistent growth we predicted but, most important, the first six months of the year are setting the stage for even better results ahead,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America, LLC. “Demand is strong though we’ve been constrained by new model ramp up but supply will soon catch up in the second half of the year.” … CONTINUED

BMW and Toyota have announced plans to jointly develop a new sports car and other technologies. The two companies have announced today the signing of a memorandum of understanding at BMW’s HQ in Munich.

The companies plan to expand their already existing cooperation initiated in December last year, which will now include joint development of a fuel cell system, joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle, collaboration on powertrain electrification and joint research and development on lightweight technologies.

Toyota’s recent success on collaborating with Subaru to develop the highly acclaimed Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ gives us hope of an exciting sports car from BMW and Toyota.
