BMW Group is building a second production hall at a carbon-fiber factory jointly run with SGL Carbon SE to respond to growing demand for its i-subbrand models.

The automaker says it also expects to use the material in other vehicles in its lineup.

“We’re preparing the roll out of carbon fiber material in models beyond the i- model range” and the M performance-car unit, Mathias Schmidt, a BMW spokesman, said.

German business daily Handelsblatt reported today that the carmaker is planning to use carbon fiber for its planned new 7 series, expected by the end of next year.

Total of 132,892 vehicles sold in first month, increase of 7.8%
Aiming for further growth in 2014

Munich. The BMW Group’s record-breaking sales growth of last year continued in January 2014 with deliveries increasing by 7.8%. In the first month of the year, a total of 132,892 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand vehicles were delivered to customers (prev. yr. 123,302).

Mercedes-Benz withstood a late surge from BMW, ending its rival’s two-year reign as the U.S. luxury-vehicle sales leader as the breadth of Mercedes’s lineup pushed it to a record year.

Mercedes posted a 17 percent gain in December with 33,007 deliveries, as the new entry-level CLA, and revamped mid-size E-class and premium S-class cars led the gains. For the year, Mercedes sales rose 14 percent to 312,534, or 3,254 more than BMW’s 2013 total.

This was only the second time Mercedes has won the U.S. luxury sales crown, according to the Automotive News Data Center. It earned its other title in 1999 when it sold 189,437 vehicles in the U.S.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 3, 2014… The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported December sales of 43,981 vehicles, an increase of 0.3 percent from the 43,855 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), the world’s biggest maker of luxury cars, is considering building engines in North America for the first time and expanding vehicle production in the region to capitalize on growing demand, three people familiar with the matter said.

BMW may establish a motor factory in Mexico or the U.S., and the Munich-based company could potentially decide on the project in 2014, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are confidential.

The carmaker would join German premium-auto rival Mercedes-Benz in producing engines in the region as Asian and U.S. rivals already do. The BMW Group reported record monthly sales for November. With 174,996 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles delivered worldwide, sales were 2.7% higher than for the same month last year (prev. yr.: 170,461). Between January and November 2013, sales increased by 6.8% to reach a new all-time high of 1,777,017 vehicles (prev. yr.: 1,663,615).
