Twelve years after the start of production of BMW cars back in 2003, the Chinese production site in Shenyang has reached an impressive milestone: At the newest plant at the production site, Tiexi, the one-millionth vehicle produced in China has rolled off the assembly line earlier today. The anniversary vehicle is a BMW 3 Series Sedan long version; the model has been produced exclusively for the Chinese market since 2012.

The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported December sales of 48,141 vehicles, an increase of 9.5% percent from the 43,981 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. BMW of North America today announced a modest inflationary price increase for some Model Year 2015 vehicles, effective January 5th, 2015. The Destination and Handling fee for all models is $950 and is included in the following list for current and new prices.

November saw global demand for BMW Group vehicles increase to a new record high. Worldwide, a total of 188,342 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles were delivered (prev. yr. 174,992 / +7.6%). Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 2.3 percent in November for a total of 31,019 compared to 31,752 vehicles sold in November, 2013. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 9.7 percent on sales of 298,212 compared to 271,891 sold in the first eleven months of 2013.
The BMW Group is preparing to follow up its innovative and revolutionary BMW i models with plug-in hybrid versions of the core-brand models. U.S. electric carmaker Tesla Motors is in talks with Germany’s BMW over a possible alliance in batteries and light-weight components, Tesla’s Chief Executive Elon Musk told German weekly Der Spiegel.
In an interview published on Sunday, Musk described BMW’s production of carbon fibre reinforced car body parts as “interesting” and “relatively cost efficient.”
BMW uses carbon fibres from its joint venture with materials supplier SGL to make reinforced passenger cell parts for its i3 electric hatchback and i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.

Demand for BMW Group vehicles increased in October with global sales for the month higher than ever before. A total of 184,297 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles were delivered worldwide (prev. yr. 165,854 / +11.1%). Large-scale manufacturing of cars made with lightweight carbon fiber is moving closer to reality as costs start to fall, according to a materials-development group that has BMW AG as a partner.
MAI Carbon Cluster Management GmbH, a research effort supported by Germany’s federal government, businesses and research institutions, is making progress toward reducing carbon-fiber production costs by 90 percent, according to Klaus Drechsler, head of the 80 million-euro ($102 million) project.
