At the upcoming NY International Auto Show, the all-new 5 Series will share the spotlight with the 335is Coupe and Convertible and BMW X5 SAV, which are also making their North American debuts and the BMW Alpina B7 xDrive which is making its World debut. All of the new BMWs will be 2011 models.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has once again confirmed at BMW’s annual financial results press conference today that “there will be front wheel drive BMWs in the smaller vehicle classes in the future.” New FWD and AWD drivetrains are in the works and will be used in a new range of smaller entry level BMW cars and Mini cars. The new FWD models will slot in under the entry-premium 1-series models, which will keep their RWD architecture.

BMW is not only making its vehicles more and more environmentally friendly, but its factories as well. One example is the new differential assembly facility at the Dingolfing plant which has been optimized to lower the production costs for every differential unit by about 20 percent when the facility begins operation in mid-2011. From this alone, the building’s energy usage will be 25% below the German government’s recommended standard.
