Large-scale manufacturing of cars made with lightweight carbon fiber is moving closer to reality as costs start to fall, according to a materials-development group that has BMW AG as a partner.
MAI Carbon Cluster Management GmbH, a research effort supported by Germany’s federal government, businesses and research institutions, is making progress toward reducing carbon-fiber production costs by 90 percent, according to Klaus Drechsler, head of the 80 million-euro ($102 million) project.

Overall sales of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles have continued to grow, making it the BMW Group’s best ever September. A total of 199,799 vehicles were delivered to customers, an increase of 5.3% on the same month last year (189,664). The first three quarters of 2014 were also the most successful in the company’s history. BMW has hired Roberto Fedeli, Ferrari’s ex technical director, for a yet unspecified role/position. Fedeli is set to join BMW officially in November, “but we currently can’t say what his role will be,” a BMW spokesman told Automotive News Europe. This news comes shortly on the heels of news of another notable pickup for BMW – Franciscus van Meel, former head of Audi Quattro, who will become the next chief of BMW M.

Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 8.6 percent in September for a total of 25,586 compared to 23,568 vehicles sold in September, 2013. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 11.3 percent on sales of 236,591 compared to 212,565 sold in the first nine months of 2013.

BMW M GmbH will get a new chairman from 1 January 2015, with Franciscus van Meel taking over from retiring chief Dr. Friedrich Nitschke.
The appointment is notable because van Meel, 48, joins BMW after leading Audi’s quattro GmbH division – and has not even joined BMW Group yet: his first day is 1 October.
Van Meel has worked at Audi AG since 1996, in chassis development and technical management, becoming MD of quattro GmbH in 2012.

Today, BMW Group celebrated the official opening of its newest Vehicle Distribution Center at the Port of Baltimore. The facility will serve 96 dealers within the Central and Eastern regions of BMW’s dealer network.
