The BMW M7 (or hybrid or M-sport) prototype has been spotted again, this time with a bulging hood which typically indicates an ///M engine underneath. However, the usual other signature ///M bits are missing, such as quad tail pipes and side fender accent.

This car is BMWs entry level xDrive car using a 2.0l 4 cylinder diesel engine putting out about 143hp. This car is meant for economy first of course and seems to be filling in a gap while BMW awaits the arrival of the X1.

I know, I know there has been alot of talk of why BMW would take its biggest largest car, with such a big engine and make that into a hybrid. But I look at this as just the first of many cars, and if BMW can make it happen with this car, imagine how good it will be when the technology trickles down.

BMW releases first details for Concept 7-Series ActiveHybrid
Next months Paris Motor Show will see Mercedes-Benz and BMW go head-to-head in the hybrid stakes, with both carmakers scheduled to unveil advanced petrol-electric versions of their respective flagship saloons at the upcoming show. One of our members Daniel N recently caught this BMW X5 with a large hood mount testing in Michigan. This car has been speculated by most everyone as being a hybrid version of the X5 with technical monitoring equipment resting under the large hood mount. Most notable about these pictures is that the car is cruising around Michigan so it seems we are in store for some hybrid BMWs on US shores in the near future

According to BMW chief executive Norbert Reithofer in a pre-release of his interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the next generation 7 Series, which is coming out later this year, will get some sort of hybrid powertrain. The details of this powertrain are still in the air as far as we know, but we have a feeling it will be inline with what Lexus has been offering and will be decidedly weighted towards power. What is this car exactly? Looks like an X6 with a hood scoop. You might be fooled into thinking that this is some sort of ///M variant. In fact this is a planned hybrid drive version of the X6 and the hood scoop is used to mount the monitoring equipment needed for testing.
