View Full Version : C63 from $53,800
///M3

Press Release, LeftLaneNews:Mercedes-Benz's all-new C63 AMG is intended to go head-to-head with BMW's M3 sedan, and the car's pricing will reflect that rivalry. Mercedes has announced that the C63 will sticker from $53,800 — the same base price as the BMW M3 sedan.
To compete with the M3, the C63 features large performance-oriented tires and wheels, an aggressive bodykit, a much sportier interior, and suspension and chassis improvements.
The sprint to 62 mph takes a scant 4.5 seconds according to Mercedes — and that's likely a conservative estimate: real world acceleration is typically even quicker than claimed times.
Unlike the M3's small displacement V8, the C63 uses a big 6.2L V8. The C63's powerplant is good for 443 lb-ft of torque and 457 horsepower. The torque curve of the engine is just as impressive as its output: from 2000 to 6250 rpm the driver always has more than 360 pound-feet on tap — ideal for powerful acceleration in any engine speed range.
A new seven-speed AMG automatic transmission with paddle shifting provides a wide range of driving modes. The different modes are "S" (Sport), " C" (Comfort) and "M" (Manual). Gearshifts in "S" mode are around 30 percent faster than in "C", and no less than around 50 percent faster in "M" mode.
With that amount of performance on tap, and a price to match the M3, Mercedes looks to steal at least a few sales away from its cross-country rival.

That's the base price--but remember, the options are pricey. From what I remember the P2 pkg is mandatory with the c63--about $2800. I just withdrew from the waiting list at a local dealer. There's not a day where I don't love getting into my M3. Hope to have the same feeling with the new gen coupe.

True, I believe it does... pretty much only one option I think, which is the premium option which comes with everything. The performace option, sadly, won't be available till '09 (comes with multi spoke 19s, LSD, ect.), so I guess a loaded car will come to around 60k, which is exactly what my S5 is gonna cost. I may have to take a look at this car.

Wonder if it will have C350 seat bottoms?
Also, I read somewhere that starting next year in the US model names referring to engine size would have to be accurate. Wonder if it will change to C62 next year?

Yep, I think you are absolutely right about the performance package. It will definitely be worth taking a look at. I called my dealer as soon as I heard the news about the price, lol.
One advantage it seems, is that those who were wanting to go the M-DCT route, won't have to wait for the transmission, and won't have to pay extra for it with the Merc. Though, the Mercedes auto and M-DCT are QUITE different transmissions.

lol, so true about the seat bottoms. Though, I think the 328i/335i sport seat bottoms don't look too bad with the US ///M seats.

It truly is. I was anxiously waiting for the C63 price to be announced. Even though I was seriously considering the M3, after I got the Dinan flash I just realized that in terms of power, there wouldn't be a large enough difference between my 335i and the M3.

Wow! From everything I read the C63 was supposed to start at 63,000. At 54 its a great alternative. But from all the reviews its supposed to be a real handful to drive. Not really the athlete the M3 is. But thats for another debate. Hmmm E92 for him, C63 for her. Hmmmm.

The C55 AMG had a base price of $54,620, so the C63 AMG is priced lower than the C55 AMG in terms of base price of course.

The C55 AMG had a base price of $54,620, so the C63 AMG is priced lower than the C55 AMG in terms of base price of course.
I guess they could hit that price mark since they didn't have to develop a new engine. Just used one that had been used in every other AMG ride.

Ahem, hypocrisy?
Well, the engine is a detuned version of the engine used in the E63 AMG, among others.
But let's be reasonable, the M5 and the M6 share the same engine. And the M coupe has the E46 engine, correct? 328 and 528, 335 and 535. Both companies do it to an extent.
And Mercedes offers many AMG models, not just 4 like BMW, so don't you think it would be a bit impractical to develop completely new engines for all of these high-performance vehicles, especially after BMW doesn't do this either?

Who cares about this car the M3 ties or bests its souped up big brother - the Black Series.
More interesting news, straight from the news stand and the latest edition of SportAuto magazine (recent lay over in Frankfurt). The "mighty" AMG CLK 63 Black Series, with a 87 hp and 170 ft lb torque advantage merely ties the M3 at the Nurburgring, 8:05 Thumbs up BMW, thumbs down Mercedes. Despite the (boy) racer and DTM appearance the M3 is still the better car on the track. To be fair the Black did slightly best the M3 at Hockenheim, 1:13.8 to 1:14.3. Not reading German, I am still fairly sure the B.S. topped the M3s 155 mph limited top speed on the fastest part of the course. Hence with the electronic limiter removed the M3 is faster at the Ring. M-DCT will only further the margin of victory. Last note: tires were "equivalent" in the test with PSC+ on the M3 during its run vs. Pirelli P Zero Corsa on the B.S. Other performance metrics such as braking, slalom, lateral gs and times for other courses were tied or split between the two cars. Again a big hats off to BMW.

That's like comparing the M3 to the M6 and the M6 time is 8:07 and 8:09. The M6 and CLK 63 B.S. is really the better comparison, similar weight and power. Both are close to 4000lbs(M6 is 3909 and CLK63 B.S. is 3880) with 500hp . Regardless, that's still impressive for the M3 to match the B.S. and beat the M6.

It is not the best comparison. I made it based on this reasoning. C63 AMG and M3 are direct competitors. However the CLK 63 BS is still a 2 door, range topping performance Coupe, much like the M3. Due to price the B.S. and M3 will likely not be cross shopped much, but they will be a bit. I agree M6 is certainly a better comparison. So the point here was that the M3 can still keep up nicely in most performance categories despite way less power, torque and more importantly an inferior power to weight ratio.
@Epacy: No link. This was straight from the magazine off the rack.

I understand what you're saying. My point is, although the M6 is a coupe just like the M3 coupe, i still would'nt compare them. Just like i would'nt compare the M6 to the C63, although the M6 would probably beat the C63 on the track seeing how the C63 is so uncontrolable and all over the place. Bottom line is, the M3 for the price and power, it is quite amazing how it stacks up against cars much more powerful and much more expensive.

Wait...so a fully loaded M3 cost 70,000 and a C63 only cost 60,000? Wow...now that might change my opinion of me getting a M3 don't you think? Since the AMG is faster and sounds better... ><
You will lose 10 grand in merc resale vs m3 anyway...
