My fellow E92 M3/M-DCT enthusiasts.

Are we going to let our brothers Lucid, Nechronics, Mantis, Southlight, ChinoOrtega and others show us up with their cool aviators and official 6MT Club???

Come on guys lets show those old timers that we are the wave of the future. We will no longer stand for jerkyness in our gear changes. In traffic our feet will be at ease as we go into automatic mode effortlessly with complete precision. We demand smooth and fast gear changes every single time. We will always get 0 - 60 in 4.6 seconds or less no matter our mood or the quality of our effectiveness as a driver.

And most importantly, club M-DCT's wives will be happy. And you know what they say?
Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow. ~Swedish Proverb

I am in.....

We need to start looking at cool avatars.

The Club 6MT have a cool avatar but how do you show the great technology that is the M-DCT?

I am sure people had this debate with the electric starter.... The Hand-crankers had a great 1920's Internet avatar of a handcrank and the Electric starter guys had mediocre avatars of a key or a button.

We need something cool for M-DCT

Although I never got around to formalizing a club I think I am actually a founding memeber. We have BS-ed about such a club for sometime. I guess I just did not feel the need to formalize things. It is OK as well to stick to formalities, in which case I'll just be the spokesman or communications officer.

M-DCT FTW.

P.S. My DCT car is on order as well.

I am test driving a 6MT this weekend and the MDCT when it arrives at my dealer. No buying decision until I test drive.

My 335xi would be the car to go if I did buy.

Hey Footie, good work on the 6MT avatar..... I am thinking for the MDCT logo, something novel would be ideal (not too far off from the geek with the joystick).

See if you can do something with this one (serious request)

Yes, I agree. SMG in my old e46 was great except for auto-mode but then again, I rarely drove in auto-mode. I was in my friend's Audi A3 w/dual-clutch (S-Tronic) last week & he had about 30k miles on it. The shifting was buttery smooth & I couldn't tell when it was it shifting unless he went WOT. Even though, it was barely noticeable...I'm excited! :happyanim:

Below is the first M-DCT driving impression I have seen (quoted from a Rennteam.com post). It seems as if DCT is indeed going to live up to the hype:

"Had a chance to drive shortly (45mins) M3 Coupe with M-DKG (press car with M plates). In short-awsome! Best buy all-over... IMHO all sequential manuals a la F1, e-Gear or R-Tronic will be history in less then two years. YES, M-DKG is that good IMO. Blistering fast in gearchanges, smooth enough at the same time, no stupid need for throttle modulation as on sequential manual... Fantastic... For me new M3 only with M-DKG. I am so impressed that I will order one...
One last thing-M3 with M-DKG is faster then R8 with R-Tronic. In fact belive it or not above 200km/h a lot faster."

It then goes on...

"BUT, current SOTA is M3 with M-DKG. Unbelivable how good it is! If PDK will be that good I will think about 997 series again...
M3 with M-DKG has more traction then manual version, accelerates better in all conditions, upshifts are REALLY without any power lost and downshifts are rev matched with nice throttle bips(smaller or bigger depending on selected shift speed, for example best programm for everyday use is S4 in manual mode with full DSC on and suspension in Confort). Even full auto D mode works excellent...
In short-I am floored with it!"

All I can say: Glad mine's already on order!

As I said previously, DCT is so much better than SMG in every way. Note the comment 'Even full auto D mode works excellent...', this is why I haven't went for DCT, I know I will end up leaving it in D-mode almost all of the time which is something I just don't want from my M3.

But by all means go for the DCT gearbox it will be amazing.

And so it should be the R-tronic in the R8 is a regular torque converter auto. Good job BMW!

This might be short lived, Audi are about to launch their own 7speed S-Tronic (Dual clutch transmission) for the A4/5 models, but it's only a matter of time before the R8 gets it too.

Totally different gearbox, the VW DSG7sp is transverse while the one I am talking about is for the new MLP platform which Audi has adopted for it's future cars.

May I suggest something for those undecided out there who are fellow M3 customer regardless of the gearbox choices they make.

There is very little true feed back of the plus points and minus points of the two systems, unlike the manual cars which are readily available to test drive, the DCT cars aren't and most people are choosing blind. While I appreciate what swamp2 has said about it with all his detail we need a lot more of you guys to do like-wise. The more feed-back the easier to make this decision either way.

P.S.
Please don't sugar coat it for the group, remember to minus points as well as the plus ones to give a true reflection of what's it like living with the system.

Thanks for your support.:drink:

i only have 200 miles on my dct coupe but it is night and day when compared to my previous SMG 05. The shifts in the default setting are almost seamless. i stick in 5 with the power button on (is that S-5?). The lag or extra pedal travel is taking some getting use to. i do hope bmw has a software update for it. as most have said, lag is probably the wrong word, "extra pedal travel" is actually what it is. if not for the "extra pedal travel" i would give the tranny a 10 out of 10 so with the extra pedal i would say 8 out of 10. if you are going from a slow rolling stop it can catch you off guard that is for sure.

As a member of the DCT group I would like to air some concerns I have, not some much about the gearbox but about it's pricing. I found out on Monday what the price of Porsche's version would be and considering how much every extra cost when it's attached to the name Porsche I was surprised and a little annoyed to see that it's going to be £300 cheaper than M-DCT. Even Audi are estimating their new 7sp DSG for the S4 at £1200 less, what is it with BMW's pricing?

Now we know that this transmission will be offered in the new 3 series but I very much doubt it will continue to be priced at the £2690 that is currently being charged in the M3 when you consider Audi (it's main competitor) is charging so much less. Does this mean BMW will have two different prices or worse still, decide to drop the price for both when released in the standard 3 series.

Where would such a thing leave us who have already priced top dollar when it comes to resale?

It's one of the risks you take for being the first for a manufacturer's hottest technology. There is no doubt the pricing will come down, IMO, unless inflation eats away at potential reductions. They won't charge two prices for the same tranny, unless, for instance, the standard 3-Series one is of lesser capacity, or does away with the cooler, etc.

From the Ultimate Guide to 6MT thread. A few very good/solid points then it degenerates into the typical drivel on that last wonderful point. Ugh, give me a break.

My thoughts on the 6MT so far:

At 2,000 miles, it's noticeably smoother and more precise than when new... it actually seemed smoother immediately after the 1,200mi fluid change, and has continued to get smoother since
I wish the throw was about 30% shorter
3rd is the money backroads gear, allowing a speed range from down around 40 to well in excess of any U.S. speed limit
Heel-toe rev matching on downshifts is hard for me to execute well in "Normal" throttle mode because I have to tap in quite a bit of pedal travel and put my foot in an unnatural position
"Power" throttle mode gives me the best mix of throttle response and smoothness in most driving situations
Shift feel ranks somewhere in between the rubbery feel of an Audi S4/S5, and the machined precision of a Boxster S
Let's be honest, the ladies dig a guy who can manhandle 414hp through a six-speed ;-)

I would have to agree with AJBoston's points, the gearbox was quite notchy when new as was both examples I got to drive. Compared to my S5 I felt very disappointed but it great to hear that it improves greatly.

Both transmission have there faults, notchiness with the manual and lag with the M-DCT.

Or better yet, we could put you guys in an AWD car with a live feed that Footie drives so that T Bone can cook up the commentary from the passenger seat, and the roles could be reversed in the next lap with a RWD car. We can add MT and DCT to the mix as well.

For those of you familiar with the wonderful wide brake pedal Dr. Gustave Stroes made for the E46 SMG, you will be sorry to learn that he is getting out of that business. His GSP unit, while expensive, was a work of technical art:

You're right he's getting out of the business and I've been talking to him about buying the remaining P7 E46 M3 pedals. We'll have to see if it works on the E92. I kind of doubt it, but would very plesantly surprised if it did. It appears BMW took the same LAME approach on the DCT of using the same pedal cluster as the manual tranny and they just leave off the clutch pedal arm. Because of that, you end up with a manual transmission brake pedal biased toward the gas pedal. If you left foot brake, you end up sitting almost side saddle to reach the brake.

For you guys not familiar, here is what made the E46 M3 SMG P7 brake pedal so great:

Super Stiff & Very Light
(lighter and stiffer than Gen-I/Gen-II)
CNC'd Cluster with Modified Leverage Ratio
(shorter/stiffer pedal travel)
Bronze Bushings and Thrust Washers
(very low friction design)
Tubular 4130 Pedal-Arm
(highest stiffness-to-mass ratio)
7" wide brake pedal lets you brake like the pros
(right foot or left foot brake)
Kit includes all required parts
Custom Fabricated in the USA
(Built to super-precise standards)

Here are some pics installed on my E46 M3. http://store.bimmerperformancestore.com/images/gspp7pedal1-800.jpg
http://store.bimmerperformancestore.com/images/gspp7pedal4-800.jpg
http://store.bimmerperformancestore.com/images/gspp7pedal3.jpg

Here are a couple more pics from Daytonviolet's car (the guy with ALL OEM CSL parts):
http://store.bimmerperformancestore.com/images/daytona1-800.jpg
http://store.bimmerperformancestore.com/images/daytona2-800.jpg
The bottom pic shows how the P7 brake pedal is only slightly higher off the floorboard than the gas pedal. That make it really easy to transition from gas to brake with the right foot or dead pedal to brake with the left foot.

Hopefully, we can bring this great product to market for the E92 M3, too. I'll really miss mine if it won't work. :-(

I almost forgot to mention...I'm in the E92 M3 DCT club, too. I ordered mine and it should be here about the end of July.

question guys real quick. are MDCT cars still selling over MSRP in the US, west coast, or california??

Most are selling AT MSRP. My buddies at Steve Thomas BMW and Rusnak BMW say they don't charge over invoice because they know if they ding someone like that, it's likely that will be the only car they will ever sell them. New Century BMW charges charges $5,000 over MSRP if the car is sitting on the lot vs. ordering, but that isn't an issue, because seldom are there any DCT cars sitting. Crevier had 2, but they ordered them with moonroofs (Do'H!), so that was a deal breaker for me, so I'm still waiting for the one I ordered. Hopefully it will be on the boat next week. It's a long transportation wait for those of us on the West Coast...Across the Atlantic > Thru the Caribbean > Thru the Panama Canal > Up the west coast of Mexico > To Port Hueneme, CA (about 10 miles from us). Apparently, that process still takes 4-5 weeks. :thumbdown

Funny you should mention that ........................ no, but then if you have read any of my posts you will know how I rate understeer when it comes to normal road use and road cars.

Don't leave it so long next time. :drink:

You changed sides, I hadn't heard.

YOu can compete if you get 2 more gears of wit and a 50 shot of IQ and an enema of personality :bellyroll

That's harsh and overdone.

Ok I think we are getting way off topic here.

Sorry, I guess I had something to do with things going off topic as well...

Kind of an off the wall question.

How many SMG E46 M3's vs. manual E46 M3's were ordered?

It seems like the majority in the used car market are SMG's.

I heard (so no official data) that it was evenly split between 6MT and SMG2.

Mine is officially on the way. I found out it is on the cargo ship named Grand Venus and is due to land in Port Hueneme, CA on 7/26. I should have it around 8/1.

But...I'm not excited or anything.

Add my new “teaching aid” to the club. Purchased off the lot at Irvine BMW last week, traded my E36 M3 for a 2008 E92 M3, M-DCT, Silverstone II w/Fox Red and Carbon leather, Carbon Fiber Roof, 19” wheels, Technology Pkg., Premium Pkg., Enhanced Audio, Heated Seats, PDC, USB adapter.

Ali Shayegan –Client Advisor was very helpful. I stopped in to purchase a lower inner fender panel for my wife’s 525iT and to show her the M3 colors. We’re looking at colors with Ali and are shown an E92 M-DCT in Silverstone II…….well not “my planned” color choice, but my wife liked the color combo. Ali offers a test drive (way to get me hooked), I teach Automotive Power Train and Automatic Transmissions, am I interested…:D. After my training lesson as a passenger in Swamps car:cool!: I had been dreaming of working the paddles myself.

After the test drive my wife encourages me to purchase something different than my old color combo (Arvus Blue w/grey interior). She was right I love my new car!!!:happyanim: …….and my wife:love:

Officially a member since last Monday.

I miss heel and toe. :bonk:

But I giggle like a school girl when I get on the throttle and the DCT bangs out gear changes in milliseconds.

Just ribbing you. I seriously considered DCT, but it wasn't available when my order went though. Guess I'll consider DCT-II on my next M3.
