Is there a big difference between sapphire black and jest black??

Is there a big difference between sapphire black and jest black??
most definatly! The sapphire black has a very distinct metallic tone to it which makes it really sparkle under lights at night (at a gas station for example), and during the day it gives the black a certain depth. The down side is that when it gets dirty, it looks like this sort of dirty gray color which is really nasty :(.
Jet black on the other hand looks really deep and black when its clean, but when its not perfectly clean, it looks sort of flat and dull and a little cheap, takes away some of the class of the car IMO.
Id go for the metallics anyday, they just give the car so much more..

Black is so nice, but I refuse to buy it because the upkeep is simply rediculious! And I like my cars nice and shiney 100% of the time! Silver or white is for me

Only wheels dealer installed.
Alpina does not do "tuning". They build complete cars and as such donīt have an E90 in their portfolio yet. Expect a true Alpina E90 to be at least one if not two years away (the Alpina version of the E60 jst came out)

BMW has the best non-metallic black on the market in my opinion. A neighbor has a black Bentley Continental GT and it's stunning too. But's that $150K+. BMW's black is just right. It looks a foot deep unlike Mercedes which spoils their black with a too glossy clearcoat finish. No depth. For mass produced cars, Toyota doesn't do a bad black either.

Unfortunately, I don't know. To me it looks like jet black, but with the black color, you can't really tell for sure if it's jet or sapphire unless the photo is really close up. Sorry.

I'm in a similar situation. My colour of choice has always been SG. However, I saw SG on Friday and thought it was
nice, but I was not blown away as I expected to be. Maybe I have seen too much SG on the net that my expectations were too high? I don't know.
I agree 100% with what "a3ndy" once said in the SG thread in this forum... that "Silver and Black are the colours to go for". So marcus330i, good luck with the colour decision on arguably 2 of the best E90 colours.
Back to my story...to give SG another chance, I went back to the dealer on Saturday, and was lucky enough to see a 330 in SG and a 320 in non-metallic Black next to each other inside the showroom... I stood there in amazement when I realised that Black looks a whole lot nicer than SG.... Of course I hated what I saw because my mind has been set on SG for more than 4 months now. But I'm happy that I realised this early enough. I would have hated it even more, if I only realised it at the time when I couln't change my order. Luckily I still have until the end of May to change my options.
I was also lucky enough to see another SG parked outside in the sun, and to my disappointment once again it was not as nice as in the pictures. I'm also unhappy with what I saw when I took a closer look on SG with my nose almost touching the metal. I can't explain what I saw, but I just didn't like the colour details of SG on a closer look.
Make no mistake, SG looks nice, but I just think Black looks even nicer....and that's just my subjective opinion of course... I would still advise SG followers like myself to compare SG to other colours on a real car. You need to be 100% satisfied with it....don't let other people dictate on your taste... after all, you have to live with that colour.
The only reason I never considered Black for the E90 was that I read that it looks bad on the E90...however, after seeing it in person, I beg to differ, and I think it's up there with the best colours for the E90....so, if you are reading this and you love SG, don't worry, this is just my personal opinion and observation. I still love SG, but not more than Black, and I would still choose SG over Arctic anyday.
With my love for dark colours, I have reluctantly removed Silver from the equation. The only difficulty for me now, is choosing between the non-metallic Black and Sapphire Black, and it should be an easy job to do. I'm not worried about keeping it clean, but the stories about swirl marks are getting me worried, but not enough to go back to SG.
All I need now, is to see Sapphire Black in the metal, then my chopping and changing of options and colours will be over. I would appreciate advice on choosing betweeen the two Black exterior colours.

thrill30, I had planned to get the titanium silver. However, once I went to the dealer and saw how stunning the Sapphire Black looked on the e90, I immediately decided to change to the Sapphire Black. Also, try to look at a Sapphire Black e90 that has the sports package. You will be impressed!

Kekimka, that's awesome....I'm very glad to hear that. Thanks for the vote of confidence on Sapphire Black.... I'm a big fan of metallic colours.
I can't wait to see SB in the metal.... I need to hunt one down....my deeler has lots of Jet Black E90's but no Sapphire Black.... I don't know why....it's time to tour around other dealerships.

Thrill, check out the new black E90 posts that came out today.
These are Jet Black:

This is a good comparison of Black Sapphire (shown on E60):
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128&page=2&pp=22
I ordered Black Sapphire, and will take a bunch of pictures when i take delivery first week of June.
I've had Jet Black before on my E46 and wanted something different, which is why i went with Sapphire. Its not as deep black as the Jet Black, but is a little lighter and shines a bit more because of the metallic.
Thanks.

These are definitely Black Sapphire:

See the last few 320iSE Pictures at the bottom of the page, shown with the front carbon fiber lips in the showroom. It almost looks a little like Monaco Blue, but its not, that's just the metallic black difference.
I went to the dealership last week and didn't have my camera, but they had both Jet Black and Black Sapphire. Both look great.

Thanks Nathan
I was a little confused by all the Black E90's which have no description to indicate whether it's Jet Black or Sapphire Black.
That 320 SE, I thought it was blue.... nevertheless I think Sapphire looks sweet... judging by the E60 and the 320 SE.... thanks very much for the clarification....
Remember to post pictures of your Sapphire Black E90.... I will probably have already fixed my order for Sapphire Black by then, but still it will be nice to see what's waiting for me....
I know a few Sapphire Black E46's ... but I don't want any surprises now, so I want to see how it looks in an E90...I've learnt my lesson from Sparkling Graphite which was my favourite in pictures...but turned out to be less than what I expected when I saw it in metal....
Thanks again... this has been very helpful.
In your opinion, is Jet Black more prone to swirl marks than Sapphire Black? Or are they similarly prone?
Nathan
05-15-2005, 05:27 PM
Jet Black, undoubtedly is more prone to Swirls. However, if you wash and detail the car properly (see the whole Zaino thread), you won't have a problem.
I am going to put 5 coats of zaino on my E90 as soon as i get it. I already have all the stuff, just waiting for the car right now.

bozo5521
05-16-2005, 03:29 AM
Believe me, when you see these two side by side, they look nothing like each other...The Sapphire is awesome...I think its the contrast between the lights and wheels (and chrome window trim if applicable) that give it away..thats why the sapphire is so nice!! :bulge:

I'm a big fan of metallic colours, so the point about Jet Black being more prone to swirl marks makes my choice even easier(i.e. SB).... but I acknowledge the fact that I will still have to put some preventative measures against swirl marks, even on Sapphire Black.

From the Zaino site, they say they do not cater for international orders. Nevertheless, I'm sure if I search hard enough on the net, I will find another online shop that sells Zaino.
On to another point:
On Tuesday my dealer called me to come and see a 325 in Sapphire Black. You guys were absolutely spot on... Sapphire Black rocks!!!! Right there, I made up my mind and finally signed up for Sappire Black.

Yes, it is a 320d with 19" BBS CH 235front, 265rear, and lowered suspension. The owner posted the pics on a french forum www.autotitre.com/forum, so I guess the photos were taken from there... were they ? Since the owner didn't even know they were posted here...
The front kidneys have been changed to chrome ones (same as all 6 cylinders in europe)
The suspension setting is -5 front -3.5 rear.

gnosis> The front bumper was not changed... The one on your picture just doesn't have the fog lights... maybe it comes like this with the basic options... This one has a pack including the fog lights... Or it is just because it is a computer generated picture, so it doesn't have all the details...
Gnosis
06-16-2005, 09:05 AM
I'm not talking about the fog lights... I mean the horizontal plastic piece in the lower part of the front. The 320d and 320i dosen't have one. The 325i has it. And the 330i has a chromed version.
In this picture it looks like it has that horizontal piece - which it shouldn't have....
Ahhh - well. forget it. those wheels are awesome!!

gnosis> I know... What I was saying, is that the bumper without the horizontal line, is the one without the fog lights...
If you get the fog lights you get this bumper, whether it is a 320d, a 320i or a 325i.... the 330i has the same one, but with chrome
I have seen other pictures of 320d in France, and with fog lights they all had the horizontal plastic line :)
E90Fleet
06-17-2005, 07:15 AM
Sorry you are wrong
All 320i and 320d here get the horizontal pieces, wether they have foglights or not. ( i have the pictures to proove it )
Only one that is different is the 330i where they are silverish
Gnosis
06-17-2005, 08:06 AM
Ok - seems like BMW has some dim rules for when to put on the horizontal piece. But anyway - it seems that it's ok for this 320d to have that piece.
I thought it was a strict "signal" for which engine you had choosed. You know - like the different exhaust pipes. But it's not then....
Thanks for your input!

Gnosis,
Why not on a diesel? On anything other than straight away from the lights, that 320d will keep right up there with your 330i. The in gear acceleration on the 320d is virtually identical to the 330i and totally SMOKES the 325i.
When the 330d comes out, it will totally blow away the 330i and maybe then diesel owners will laugh at your car and say "..but why... why... for the love of god.... All that work on a petrol?? *Sigh*." :)

I have driven both the 320d and the (European) 325i. Revving up to 7000rpm is so much more fun than the sound of a civilized truck engine.
The 325i is one second slower on 80-120km/h acceleration in fourth gear than the 320d (7.5s vs 6.5s) . I am sure the 325i is quicker when you put it in third gear, which I think is not possible with the 320d (at least not all the way up to 120km/h).
Gnosis
06-22-2005, 02:26 PM
I promise I won't be a bit jealous of the 330d drivers. I'm sure it'll be a very nice and fast car but if it was downright pulling power I wanted I could have gotten the current M3, the RS4 or something else at a similar price as the new 330i.
However - for the ultimate in tactility and involvment few things beats a straight natural aspirated six. And a diesel will never sound like or rev like a proper gasoline engine.
And for the torque/hp debate. Torque is only good for in-gear accereration. The amount of horsepower you have is what really determines ultimate acceleration and top speed.
A 320d will not see which way a well driven 325 went.

Gnosis,
I wasn't intending to start a hp/torque or diesel/petrol debate; this is the media gallery after all. However, I am just curious as to why you think its so ridiculous that someone would try to make their diesel BMW look "sportier" (for want of a better word)? The BMW Diesel's of a given displacement are equally as fast if not faster than their petrol equivalents in every practical metric other than 0-60, and the 320d beats the petrol engined 320i here in that respect as well.
As regards sound, you clearly have not driven the 320d. On anything other than idle, the engine is as refined and civilised as the petrols. I have not doubt the 330d will improve on that further.
So again, I ask the question. The BMW diesels are as fast and handle as well as the petrol equivalents in most situations. Why is it a matter of ridicule for someone to upgrade their wheels? Is it not a "proper BMW"?
C
Footnote;
I am no expert but I believe this statement to be either factually incorrect or misleading at best
"Torque is only good for in-gear accereration. The amount of horsepower you have is what really determines ultimate acceleration and top speed."
I thought cars accelerated hardest at their torque peaks in any given gear and that hp is a calculated value based on the torque produced by the engine at any given rpm. And actually, in gear acceleration is what is most useful to 95% of drivers 95% of the time. Unless you are a traffic light maniac or love high rpm dumped clutch starts, in gear acceleration is vital, particularly where overtaking is concerned.
Finally on the 320d v 325i debate, that statement makes me almost 99.99999% certain you haven't driven the 320d. Because, I am pretty sure that for any given cross country route, and two drivers of equal ability, the 325i would not be able to lose the 320d.

I think you have destroyed your own argument there......
Torque = in-gear acceleration = real world speed A:B.
Having said that, I would support your view that an in-line 6 is much nicer to listen to/rev....
Fortnately/unfortunately today's diesels are very different beasts to the old truck engines, and they perform very well indeed.
But hey, this is the "gallery section"..... :confused2

In reply to both your posts:
I have driven the 320d automatic, the 325i automatic, the 325 manual and the 330i manual.
Yes - maximum acceleration for any given gear often occur at the torque peak. But maxium acceleration for any given SPEED often occur at the horsepower peak. And since the 325 has much more horsepower it will be able to accelerate faster. This is simple physics.
However you do need to keep that 325 boiling. And that was what I meant by "well driven".
The 320d is a proper BMW - no doubt. But that car doesn't need those wheels!! They are just to good for it. I'm very against "over-wheeled" and "under-motored" cars in general...

There's a nice little moment in the new Batman movie "Batman Begins" where Bruce Wayne is looking at a prototype of the batmobile but it's in a desert camoflage color scheme. He asks the person showing him the car (Morgan Freeman) "does it come in black?"

Thanks...I got black because I thought the wheels look the best on this dark color....they actually appear to be bigger than on the silver/arctic/white body. I'll spend more time keeping it clean but it's worth if for the high contrast.

Thanks! The clear bra is almost invisible, the biggest thing is the surface isn't the same shine as the metal but it's not a huge difference. I don't know yet how it will age, but you do need to walk right up to it to tell it's there. Terra is very nice (I really wish they offered an Imola Red interior or at least the lemon they offer in Europe). Grey is very nice and would go better with wood trim in my opinion than Terra. But I think Terra goes better with Aluminum trim which I wanted. The camera was a Canon 1D Mark II. However any recent digital SLR from Canon or Nikon can produce about the same quality image.

I like the color, but from my past experience with it it is not so good when there are scratches or swirl marks visible. It is also one of the hardest to keep kleen! I have a white Maxima and it was easier which is why I bought another white car.

Nice 2008. How'd you like the CAs at Open Road? They were horrible for me and wanted $50 more per month than at Freehold so I took my business elsewhere.

The wheels have been changed for the 2008 328xi. Thanks for the compliments.
We ended up working with a very reasonable CA at Open Road, and he was able to give us a offer that was about $1500 less than Freehold's. We wanted to buy at Freehold (service facility), but the CA we met there was unpleasant, and the price was unacceptable.

Oosp! I didn't remember I posted this photo. The 323i belongs to a member tcchan. The wheels are 18" staggered, 225/8.5 255/9.5. The OZ Botticelli's back wheels are indeed different from the front.
