View Full Version : GruppeM CAI and Exhaust Installed (pics only)

As promised, here are the pics of the CAI and Exhaust.
The sounds clips will be posted when I return from my overseas trip...

The sounds from these two mods are incredible. The CAI enhances the high-pitched intake noise, while the exhaust is both loud and throaty. A bit of droning at revs between 3k and 4k RPM though.

I left my driver's side window (right side for me) to enjoy the sounds, and my right ear actually started tingling after a while. Real cool...

All in all, if you want to remain stealthy, the exhaust is NOT for you. It scares little children and intimidates other drivers...

No regrets!

Cheers

I am now a bit concerned this exhaust might be too loud for my tastes. Looking forward to you videos.

my butt dyno says, YES. i can "feel" more power, more responsive.
500km to allow the mods to bed down before i dyno it again.

Other than weight saving of the CF, the setup looks the same like the OEM. Does one think there will be a significant gain in HP or more just for sound?

Thats got to be one of the best factory engineered intakes I have ever seen. Normally car manufacturers say "How can we fit an intake around this engine?", but the M3's design seems to include the intake as an integral part of the engine. I wish I had an intake this good on my Cooper S, I'd make like 20 more hp.

edlms

yes, water will flow into the intake. but the design is such that the water will just flow out through the bottom hollow. the central "box" (where the bonnet intake is) is connected to a separate grill intake and and front scoop intake. the three pieces are loosely fitted to one another with a rather large gap at the bottom where the water will flow out.

i don't anticipate any problems with this cos the OEM one is designed in a similar fashion.

Hey everyone, I'm not sure what happened, but I had made a post about the exhaust system and intake a few weeks back. You guys are pretty much paying retail for the system. I am direct with Gruppe-M and have been an authorized dealer for years. Please PM if you want pricing on either the intake or exhaust. I just don't want to see you guys pay retail for something that can be had for cheaper. Thanks.

Nice work.

Would have been nice to see dynos with each mod added separately to figure out how much HP was added by the exhaust and how much by the intake.

At 7hp, I suspect most of this was due to the exhaust. The stock airbox looks very efficient and I can't see how the GruppeM design could really improve on it (bar sound)

i know what you mean... that was the original intention (to do 2 separate dynos) but... sigh...

the sound is pretty good though...

BMW-M-Mexico - glad you're enjoying the mods as much as i am. you're going (or gone) in a direction that i'm following closely. really like what you've done with your car.

there was a car show in japan recently (just this weekend i think) and many mods were on show. interesting stuff... i'll post the link if i can find it, cos my shop guy who went got photos that he took only.

of note, a side skirt add-on from 3D is interesting.

I will be doing exactly this. I've already dyno'd at 100 octane fuel and posted. I will redyno at 91 octane fuel and post. Then I will add the Gruppe-M CAI and redyno at 91 octane fuel and post.

How much is the Gruppe M exhaust? Intake looks great, but I highly doubt that successive dynos would show the 7-18hp increase discussed earlier. I am thinking this increase is likely due to the filter in the GruppeM unit being less restrictive and not the design on the intake. Wait a few months, drop in a BMC or Streamline filter when it comes available, and I bet it would show the same increase as this intake for $2500 less. Very pretty intake, but for $2800 I will pass and much rather spend that money on an exhaust...

Yep, if you don't have the extra cash, I think your probably correct. But I'm pretty certain you wouldn't get that RAM air sound either.

No problem Kevin! Was a good time hanging out with you.

While installing Kevin's Gruppe-M intake we were talking about how it would be nice to have the air duct in the bumper on the right side also lined with CF. This would give the front end a nice balanced look.
