I was wondering if it was possible, to put some sort of chip or firmware alteration that would allow me to watch dvd's and play playstation via the screen that comes with iDrive? that would be nice

Someone said besides the tuner you also require ECU to be programed for it... I looked around, I did see some sites mentioned they have kits for 7 series with iDrive, but don't know if those will work for our car.

Did any of you guys notice that when you select "entertainment" from the iMenu screen, and highlight "CD" you have an option to scroll over and select either "CD" or "DVD". However, DVD is unavilable and when you try to select it, it doesn't work. I tried this with a DVD movie in the DVD and regular CD drive...nothing. But the system seems definitely capable of playing the DVDs here in the states. I would assume there is some kind of software update to get this working. However, I'm not sure how the DOT would respond to this, which is why you can't play movies from a car right off the line. If anyone knows anymore about this, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Thanks :cool!:

Perhaps the DVD selection is only for DVD-Audio? Although I don't know if a sound system that accepts DVD-Audio can also play the audio of a DVD movie.

There definitely is a way to do it. When it comes down to it, the worst you can do is have an aftermarket tuner/dvd player and just simply splice that unit's output into the video input of the lcd screen. I just want to find out if there's a cleaner way since europe seems to have factory tuners available. If as you say, software seems to be present in our iDrive and all we're missing is the hardware, then this should be fairly easy.

There is a Yahoo group called HackTheIBus where you can get more info on adding video to the iDrive/Nav system.

The DVD selection is if you have that over head screen DVD option on your E90.

FYI - In contrast to previous Bimmers, the E90 does not have an I-Bus. This unfortunately means that a lot of 3rd party accessories/mods that have been designed to tap into the car computer system (like the stealth one rader detector system) will not work with the E90 (at least not without being modified to work with the new computer/bus system of the E90).

I asked the dealership over here in Germany about this for a US spec 3 series he said they dont allow dvd's to play because of the DOT however they have some sort of box or chip he didnt get to specific about that he could install to have it play DVDs

Check out www.TVandNav2Go.com. These guys say that it's possible to convert your Nav screen on the E90 to a DVD/TV screen. This mod works regardless if you have Nav or Not. You can have video in motion. The mod will give you 2 inputs 1 for DVD and 1 for backup camera. The unit auto switches to backup camera when you put the car in reverse.
