View Full Version : 335xi is faster than the 335i

... dispite being 200lbs heavier.
why is that? and why isn't that true for the 328i/xi?

hahaha. threads like this is why it took you guys so long to get your own forum.
It's faster 0-60 because the torque on the 335 is enough to cause traction losses when you're trying to come swinging out the gate. Thus, the all wheel drive minimizes wheel spin and gets the car off the line faster. Thus, it has a faster 0-60 time because generally, the most important factor of a 0-60 time is a launch (which is while 60-100/120 and 1/4 mile ET/Trap are how most people really determine how fast a car is).
In the 328.. well, you guys dont have as much wheel spin off the line so the awd isn't going to give you that big of an advantage. There's not really much wheel spin to be minimized going from an i to an xi.
Not to mention that 0-60 times are all really bogus calculations anyway. Edmunds can go out there and run a 5.5 and Road and track might get a 4.8 on the same day. 0.2 seconds on a manufacturers 0-60 time should be taken with a grain of salt.

hmmmm i always thought thats what the DTC was for... not AWD but I guess that makes sense.

I think the xi may be slightly faster 0-60 but overall i has better balance and less drivetrain loss.
This is all on dry roads of course. Add water and I'd put the xi in front every time. :D

Everyone always talks about extra drivetrain loss, but doesn't the cluch disengage the front axle from the power over 100ish? So really the i is faster in the midrange, but it's the same up top (weight isn't relevent there, all drag and power) and the xi is faster at launch.

my SA told me it was something like 40F/60R power unless x drive detected slipping then it changes to 50/50.
not sure about it at or over 100mph though.

because N54 engine is a lot powerful than the N52 engine..
therefore 335i tends to have less grip on the launch than the all wheel drive 335xi..
but after 100km/h 335i will catch up like one mean motha facka XD

I was under the impresson that AWD split was more like 5/95 until the xdrive detected spillage then it went 50/50.
Can anyone confirm?

X drive on the 335 is infinitely variable (meaning 0-100% on whatever end *corner* has traction). Under full traction conditions, it's biased towards the rear (roughly 36% F / 64% rear).
Apparently above 160Kph (100mph) there is no power delivery to front axles.

There is a bit of drivetrain loss. The front end power is only disconnected at the transfer case. The front axles, diff, and prop shaft (driveshaft between front diff and transfer case) is still being spun by the front wheels when power is directed away from the front.

hmmmm i always thought thats what the DTC was for... not AWD but I guess that makes sense.
What DTC does is limit the power going to the wheels (either through ABS or the DBW throttle) to maintain maximum acceleration. So, if you are driving all 4 wheels (theoretically 75hp per wheel vs. 150hp per wheel in RWD) you can use all of the power without DTC interfering because of wheel spin.

i read that edmunds is more accurate b/c they do it from a standstill whereas road and track times are sometimes based on a rolling start. whether this is true i am not sure but it would make sense since road and track times are usually lower than edmunds

More often than not, a rolling start with a turbo AWD car won't be as fast as start off the line.

Most car company's will send a slighlty tweaked car to magazines for review. you will find that especially with the 335 reviews. I think it was either car and driver or road and track that had a situation where the car provided by BMW was significantly faster then the loaner they got from someone who worked for the magazine.

DTC is going to reduce power to the wheels to reduce slip. Xi is putting down max power to more wheels to reduce slip. Max power > reduced power!

Quicker vs faster- depends on what you like. Stoplight to stoplight I think the xi is a blast, because you can pretty much give it 100% without making a spectacle of yourself with wheelspin. By the time "faster" would be an issue, you're probably on the brakes anyway.
At the drag strip, faster is going to be better.
BTW- I got 4.9 sec 0-60 and 13.5 sec 1/4 mile with my stock xi using an Escort G-timer (0-60 in 4.4 and 1/4 mile in 13.0 @108 mph with SSTT), so though the xi is "quicker", it's not exactly not fast.

i hit 6.12 with my G-timer doing 0-60 in my xi. didn't think that was too bad considering its under what bmw claims for the 328i

My 335 is an XI because after building, driving and watching ludicrously fast mustangs (in the 90s) that could annihilate the tires 1st thru 4th for as long you dared to keep the pedal down, it became clear to me how useful that type of power was.
I've no idea how fast I'll be able to row my 6MT 335XI but I think 60ft (or 0-60) times won't be a problem! I hope to be able to knock out a 13.5 bone stock.
I've seen plenty of street racing years ago and much more powerful cars used to get beat by slower cars frequently. Getting spanked by a car that runs mid 13s when you've managed to run high 11s on slicks on a good day is downright embarassing. 335Is don't even have a limited slip diff...ouch.:D

I ran 12.85@111 mph with V2 only at the dragstrip. :D
A couple of guys here with more mods than me, ran 12.4 all day long. Thats fast for a 365 days a year street setup. AWD rules!

No rear LSD, and turbo power in a relatively heavy coupe equals one wheel peels. It also means that in any inclement weather you can't enjoy having a fast car. I started out in a RWD car, then moved to an STI. After enjoying AWD for 3 years in my STI, and the past few months in my 335xi coupe, I can unreservedly say that AWD is a much better choice for a daily driver. But even on a road course there are serious advantages to AWD that outstrip the negatives of extra weight and drivetrain loss. The real advantage being that you can lay into the power much earlier then in a rwd car. Also, with the variability in the BMW AWD system you don't loose the ability to steer with the throttle at the limit.

My last car was a 2004 infiniti G35x Sedan and while it was a nice car, it's AWD sucked with the stability control on. It bogged all over and played dead when it felt the slightest touch of wheelspin.
That and the fact it was an automatic made it just not all that fun to drive. It handled well enough, but the the 335XI is just in a different class.
I've yet to even turn the SC off on the 335xi because I've pushed it a little and banged an occasional gear or two and barely got it to flash the yellow light on the dash indicating it was intervening.
In short, the G35 drove like it was a RWD car a lot of the time. The 335XI drives a lot more like a full-time AWD car- stuck to the road (an old eagle talon comes to mind. I've not driven any newer like an EVO or STi).

Exactly. Dyno glory and banzai runs are good for bragging rights but line it up next to XI on Main street USA and lets see how well 400+HP goes through one tire. Been there, done that 10 years ago. You don't get to heat up your drag radials on the street and most people don't drive around town with race gas.
I seriously doubt a "true street" setup 335i w/mods running 400+HP is going to beat a similar 335XI on the street on OEM style tires. The XI should pull 1.7x 60fts without much trouble (I have a 6MT...dunno about 6AT). I'm thinking the 335i is a lot closer to 2.0x 60ft unless they really know how to drive. One mistake and it's "one tire fire" time. b-bye!

This why all the 1000+ hp Supras run 13 second 1/4 mile times. All that power does no good if you can't get it to the ground.

If it is, 13.3@103.8 is really moving for stock car. AT or MT? Nice runs overall. I'm very interested to see how stock vs modified and AT vs MT 335xi behave in the 60ft dept.
Did you ever venture to the track to see how accurate the gtech is? I heard they are reasonably accurate (10 years ago they were a joke.).
Thanks for the graphs etc from the Gtech.

Yes a little mistake for the weight...It's 3960 lbs with driver (me) on balance not 4150 lbs. I must change the weight in G-Tech...sorry
And yes is very very accurate with the track. Tested many time. Around 0.005 - 0.008 second and 0,5 mph for 1/4
