I can't answer this definitely but I have an idea. Take a look at the installation instructions and photographs for the Akrapovic exhaust.

You will notice that the original stock single pipe gets flattened where it goes under the supporting brace. The twin pipes allow for much better flow without interference. It is interesting that the BMW floorplan design allows for a lot of space for a twin pipe installation. I bet that is for the upcoming M3 exhaust which will share the same platform.

If you look at the stock exhaust compared to the Akrapovic exhaust - the much higher quality is pretty evident.

I for one am happy to fork out the bucks for this system - I have one on order and I am looking forward to its installation. Modifications to a car are never an investment grade usage of money - it is an emotional purchase.
