I got the same feeling on my 118i sport. The 1st gear is always too long (rev to almost 3000rpm before switching to 2nd gear), and the change is not quit smooth. It feels like the 1st gear is lack of power.
I test drive the less power 316i but didn't experience the same problem. It was smooth
