Exclamation Steering wheel not responding while driving

Hi all,
I'd like to know if this has happened to anyone else?
Last weekend I was driving my 2012 328i. I stopped at a stop sign, then continue driving and suddenly the steering wheel wouldn't respond. I couldn't turn to any direction. The steering wheel was extremely stiff and dull. Eventually, I was able to pull over and turn off the car. Since then these messages show up on the LCD screen:
- Drive Moderately
- Increased steering effort required
- Consult service center

I took the car to the dealership and they said this could happen when the battery is low and I will need a new one and also a reprogramming of the system.

I think this is a major design flaw in the car system. How is it possible that when the car's battery is going low the steering wheel stops responding. While driving!
Anyone has ever had this same issue?
