Hi Tim,
I run with Conti SportContact 5P 275/35-19 in the rear (original M3/M4 tire) which has a rev. per mile of 781 (vs 778 for the front) for a ~ 0.4% difference. I think for our vehicles with a rear bias, a slightly large dia in the rear (say a 285/35-19 for my setup) would have been a better since the rears tend to wear faster, but I have not checked for clearance and that tire size is less common.
Regarding >1%, I do not know for sure but I have read that the transfer box may prematurely wear-out. In my experience when I first picked up my M4 take-offs and ran with the OE setup (255/35-19 in the front for ~2.3% difference), I notice the front drivetrain slipping/jerking a little. I did not think that was a good thing and replaced the fronts with the 245s.
