if u did not know, the same person that help develop the Avid helped on FCP.

With any non-linear there is a learning curve, and basic steps do not
change. Like mark in and out and overcut and insert edit. Vegas is another
decent non-linear as well as imovie or final cut express for the mac.
I would say let the OP dig around a bit more and experiment with editing software that may have come with his pc first before venturing into a sea of non-linear software.

with any convert u will and it's very little depending on what compression
setting you use.
What will you be using the video for? will it be for personal home use,
the web, big screen at a car show, to air on TV?
You're special knowledge is impressive. Do you work as an editor?
