Cant say that i tested it against canon, but i did compare it first hand to about every other lens in its class and it was the best of them in lack of distortion, clarity, and sharpness.
Agree that its a little too wide for portrait / people photography unless you are looking for an artistic effect. If you were going to use it for that i would go with the Tok 12-24. Its
almost as good as the 11-16, just not as fast, but it is a constant f/4 and probably a better all purpose wide angle. However, the 11-16 is tough to beat at what it does.
