Despite specious legends to the contrary, George Washington was the first person to hold the office of President of the United States. John Hanson presided over the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation, but he cannot historically claim the title of "President of the United States" any more than Jamestown founder John Smith could, given the latter's position as first executive of an American Colony.
