The panning takes some practice, but you can zoom out to 300mm to make it more manageable while you're learning. Planes are actually much easier than birds because the directional changes are more linear.
The ole 500mm would be too much for that close. Of course, you can always locate further away and you might have an easier time claiming a prime spot.
