Because BMW thinks(said so at the 4er launch in Portugal) that the person who buys the 4er wants a sporty car. That is why the car is lower, more sleeker and wider than the 3er. The 4er also is some 60% more rigid(chassis) than the 3er. I quite liked the 435i exhaust - that we drove on those press cars.
Btw... if you want a sporty exhaust tone you could also get the Performance Exhaust and or the PPK sw flash/tune from your bmw dealer.

Yeah I remember that release actually and understand the 4er is more sport orientated than the 3er. But is the dramatic change in sound due to exhaust trickery or has the engine been tinkered with?
EDIT: Is there a 28i PPK tune now?
It's looking like a 430d Gran Coupe or 435d xDrive Gran Coupe might be on the cards for the next car in mid 2015 however!
