Barrel distortion is the classic problem as you go wide. Two images below demonstrate the problem. The first is taken with my Sigma 15mm f/2.8, uncorrected. The second is the same image, but corrected for distortion in post processing:

That's a "fisheye" lens, with a 180-degree field of view, so it's as extreme as barrel distortion gets, but you get the idea.

You minimize the distortion by keeping the camera's sensor parallel with the subject, but even when parallel a fisheye has lots of barrel distortion.
