When Sears went away from their blue "in-house" card to the gold MC, I got it in the mail and promptly put it in my safe. Didn't activate it.
Some time later, I get a bill showing a $2K+ charge in Australia. Called the MC provider on the phone and told them, "Um, hate to break the news to you, but these aren't my charges. I've never been to Australia, but I'd like to. In fact, I never even activated the card." How they thieves activated my card without using my "home phone" number is beyond me (and it was a land line back then and no "spoof" programs existed on cell phones).
Needless to say, the charges were reversed and I cancelled that card.
