This is the exact reason if things are purchased online I usually go through paypal instead of putting in my credit card number. I know people will say, well paypal sucks yada yada yada, but so far I haven't had any issues and they offer a credit line similar to a credit card.
I've had a single fraudulent charge on my credit card a couple years back for $1000, but the card company caught it since it was about 1200 miles away from my residence and closed the card. Was never charged and haven't had a problem since then.
