I think BJ couldn't, Edgar was too good of a wrestler.

When you actually think about it, the caliber of fighters is always evolving and everyone who's actually a contender is "good" at all aspects of the game. Pure wrestlers like Hughes and Randy had to seriously cross train to boxing/kickboxing/muay thai, aside from having to know BJJ. The best in the game right now have no real weakness in any one particular area. Pure BJJ guys had to learn striking, and pure strikers had to learn wrestling and BJJ.

I think that's why it's so competitive, and hardly anyone holds the belt for an extended period of time (save for Silva).
