My e46 is called Hansi, and in my family's lexicon is referred to as a proper noun all the time.
E.g., -- "I am taking Hansi to the grocery store."
He is never referred to as "the/my car" nor is he ever referred to as the BMW. Its always Hansi, and when new people are around -- "who is Hansi" is always an interesting conversation.
