It IS a great lens. I met a guy using one on his second body (a 7D) with his 500mm on a 1D MkII. He was using it to grab in-flight shots as birds went past us. I tried it and it was fast and handy.
I'm happy with my 70-200mm f/4L IS used with the 1.4x TC, but the 70-300mm would be an alternative.
