I saw a white M1 in 1983 or 1984 when I was 10 yrs old. The owner was a wealthy man who owned a collection of about 10 exotics and was picking up his kid at my school. Each day I saw a different car.
I remember seeing the M1 a few times. In one instance the engine was idling and the engine was opened up. I saw the red stacks...
Automotive enthusiasm began at an early age for me. I actually had a car magazine at age 8, which I had already destroyed from so many readings by the time I saw the M1 in the flesh, and the M1 was included in that issue along with an article on a Ferrari 250 LM and a review on a 1982 911. I recall the M1 article being nearly absurd.
