"cyclist restrained himself" I might call that good survival instinct. We also do not know who else was in the car. We know there was at least 1 other person, probably more. Cyclist recognized a losing situation and left. Most people are not able to fight several individuals at once.
Nevermind that the cyclist was encumbered with gear, just took a right hand to the face, his opponent was bigger than him and willing to fight, and he does not know if his opponent or other individuals in the car had a weapon.
A lot of people have grand plans until reality sets in!
