I doubt that the X gets f/8 AF. I think it's a hardware limitation, not firmware, but I could be wrong (hopefully). BTW, the X is a FF sensor body, with even fewer pixels than the 5D MkIII. Also, there's nothing "cheap" about $6800 for the X body.
The Series II super-teles have a strong attraction for me because they're pounds lighter than my current 500mm, their IS is two-stops better (I hand hold 99.9% of my super-tele shots) and the AF function with the new Series III TCs is much faster. The only thing in the way is the cost.
With either the X or the MkIII, you'll want the Series II lenses, IF you can afford them. Those of you that shoot jpegs will appreciate that the X does in-camera correction of lens errors, which is particularly important with zooms. (I now do it automatically with DxO in post, but few people use DxO).
Here's my thinking:
Sell MkII $1,500
Buy MkIII (3,500)
Sell 500mm 6,100
Buy 600mm (12,000)
Net (7,900)
The 600mm Series II should hold its value well and can be considered an "investment", while the body will be replaced in three to five years.
