Brake fluid is a closed system, and shouldn't go anywhere. Technically, it's hydroscopic (absorbs water) so it should gain volume over time, not lose it.
You might be in a case were it was just borderline for ever, and just tripped the sensor, or maybe the brake level sensor is bad?
