Just wanted to post an update to this. I received the original receipt and sent the lens to Tokina for evaluation. I called them yesterday to check on the status and they said they received the lens on the 8/31, repaired the autofocus motor, and shipped it out on 9/1. I should have it back on Thursday. Repair was covered under warranty.

Update #2:
Tokina repaired my 16-50/2.8 and it worked for about 5 minutes before resorting back to the grinding noise. I shipped it back to them, once again, and they responded that the lens is irreparable and they are going to issue me a refund of the purchase price of the lens. The representative mentioned that this particular lens has been very problematic.
I'm thinking about the Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS as a replacement. Any advice or recommendation?
