I just got a chance to drive a 2012 528i xDrive with the N20 and it actually performed quite impressively. The 8 spd transmission and engine pairing go together nicely and allow power on demand. It is significantly faster than the I-6 in the 2011 528i. It delivers the boost thrust you would expect, but not as dramatic as in the 535i. If you didn't know it had a 4 cylinder, you wouldn't think it did. Strong suit appears to be mid-range thrust and passing performance.
