The 8 speed AT is fantastic, but the 4 cylinder engine and its turbo that makes more horsepower and torque and is faster off the line and at speed and is more fuel conscious is the real winner.
That and the look/feel of the interior which went from school-bus bland to luxury car upscale. The E90 was an awkward transitional car between the E46 (still small and sporty) and the F30 (upsized and refined). The E90 got all the bloat and none of the luxury.

I disagree. I much prefer the steering of the E90s I have owned than the F30s I have driven for good chunks of time. Reminds me of the steering of my E39 M5 at low speeds but when I would push the M5 I would get better feedback. The F30 doesn't have that reward IMO. Personally I think it's the weakest part of the power train because I agree that the N20 and 8AT are a match made in heaven. Huge improvements over the 328 E90. Big winner for BMW.
You dont seem to care for the E90 atall. Awkward, bloat, etc. However, I think the E90 was perfectly proportioned, for me at least. It was a gem. Probably why I have owned three (330,335, and currently M3).
I like the driver oriented interior of the F30 and I actually like the iPad like navi screen. The engineering is superb, but I think the cabin materials are a step backward. The upper and lower parts of the dash are my biggest gripes.
