Sounds to me like he's saving money every chance he gets. Many pro photographers are only scrapeing by. My wildlife photographer friend really works his ass off to pay the mortgage, etc. He's either in the field, hosting a shooting tour or processing pix. He does have a 5D2, but his big lenses are an old f/4.5 600mm, a 100-200mm L and a 17-35mm L, also old. Once in a while Canon loans him the latest rig, but only for a few weeks.
