It's all possible depend on conditions that it was used in. But in your case, are you sure that what you saw was not a dirt patterns rather than wear? It sounds like the seats have not been cleaned for a while and conditioned. If, for instance, you wear denim a lot, it would stain the leather exactly like you describe. The good news is, it's very easily cleanable!
You have to do a lot to wear out light Dakota in 3 years.
