There are more cubic inches of space in the back of the X5, but I found the shape of the e60's trunk to hold more of the stuff that I had to put in (Luggage, stroller, etc), I also have the back seat of the x5 slid and tilted all the way back (I think you only have this option if you have the bs third row), don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I also don't like to pack the suv so high that I can't use the rear view mirror, or stuff can fall on the kid in the back seat.
