In my senior year of undergrad work we drove up into the crater of Nevado de Toluca in Mexico. Terrifying ride up with the lunatic professor driving. The road cuts across a scree field with no guardrails and a serious drop off one side. But the inside of the crater was very cool. Like being in the world's biggest stadium.
Mark, as you'd guess, there's a lake right there at the bottom of the cirque. There's a parking lot right next to it, so, yes, I've been there. Lots of people park there and hike that ridge to the right. I drive up and around the left to the summit. I usually go right at dawn and have the road pretty much to myself and the elk, mountain goats and bighorn sheep. With an eye peeled for wildlife, it's a great M3 road.
