The interesting thing is that I'm able to explore and listen to my iPhone music library either via bluetooth or the standard Apple cable (and in this case I also see albums' covers).

Instead, in my colleague cars we weren't able to do neither of those things... Basically, he cannot control the iPhone via the iDrive! On the plus side, he can see the historical of his consumption in the ECO Pro menu, which is not present in mine!

Note that we both have the same options: standard iDrive (i.e. no GPS) and standard bluetooth connectivity (6NH).

I was expecting the 2 cars to have exactly the same hardware and software, but it looks like this is not case (software version are different indeed...).
Anyone knows why? And if his software can be updated or is it a hardware issue?
CIC iDrive vehicles without the extended bluetooth package or technology package aren't supposed to have that ability to browse iPhones via bluetooth or USB cables.

Are you sure you don't have technology package or extended bluetooth?
