I've had a loaner once that was at -2000Km but 16000 kms in the hole is terrible.
Do you have paperwork from the previous owner(s) showing the maintenance performed on it? I hope for you that it is just that the service indicator was not resetted. I really don't know how long you can run on an engine that is long overdue for an oil change.
