There is another explanation I think is more valid which is that M3 demand has been higher than anticipated which explains why so few M3s are on the lot. As a result they are more exclusive and may hold value better than the more plentiful M4s thus yielding a higher resale value in 36 months justifying the higher residual.

Residuals are sometime used to drive sales but more often than not they are designed to limit financial risk for BMWFS. They believe the M3 may hold more value in 36 months vs. M4
