I have probably found a workaround to have less contacts. On the iPhone you need to assign them to a special group, and in the Bluetooth menu of the phone, the same one where you say that you want to allow messages, you can specify which group of contacts will be shared. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising. At least I can remove a lot of numbers that I am only using once a year and surely never in the car.
