I think the light makes that particular shot. not the lens. good catch of window light.
my favorite portrait lens is a 35/1.4. puts you in the frame and just enough depth of field.

I forgot to ask in my original question rodi... on a FF or APS-C?

35mm seems pretty wide, unless you're that in-your-face kinda guy.

thanks, it worked out pretty well, i was happy with it. unfortunately the light changed shortly after, so i tossed the flash on, but i wasn't too comfortable with a flash yet at that time, so it didn't work out as well after.

that's basically what i've learned at this point, unless i'm using it just to light the room a bit.

it's either on the camera, or aiming at the ceiling. unless i have the flash sized soft box, then i just hold it in my hand (when i'm using the 7D) and let it flash remotely while i'm aiming it somewhere.

can be pretty fun to play with that way.

rodi, do you find any distortion using the 35 f/1.4 for portraits? I've heard that using wider angle lenses aren't ideal for that reason.

Firmware 1.2.5 for EOS 7D

Firmware Version 1.2.5 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

1. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were rare cases where movie files taken could not be opened when repeatedly shooting movies with specific CF cards.
2. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were cases where “Err 02″ appeared when repeatedly shooting still images with specific CF cards.
3. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery was removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempted to start shooting movies immediately, shooting would stop.
4. Improved the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
5. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when custom function C.Fn 4-1 was set to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function would not work.
6. Corrected some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese. (This applies to models in overseas markets. The models for the Japanese market do not display those languages.)

distortion? no. perspective? it's no 85mm. if you get really close, you'll have some perspective exaggeration, but it's not unflattering like a 14mm in your face.
but I think it's a natural perspective. with too long a lens, a face will look fat. a 35mm gives perspective and depth. at least to me.

Just picked up a Manfrotto background support kit (crossbar, two 1052BAC stands, 2 clips and a bag) plus two rolls of seamless paper. I was going to grab a 9' roll, then realized I didn't have the right rig to get it home! D'oh!

So instead of one background roll, I bought two of the narrower ones. The first was a neutral gray color, and I let my daughter pick out the other. She selected a Royal Blue, which also happens to be Chroma Key compatible! Nice job daughter!!

Now to play around with some shots with the backgrounds and my recently acquired strobist kit...

I honestly thought that Nikon had a larger than ~30% market share in dSLRs:

i think it's down to the fact that canon does more then just cameras, but i agree, that is a pretty big difference.

I also find it hard to believe there are that many canons out there when with all the traveling i've done in the last year and a half, 90% of what i see in my wanderings is Nikon, maybe canon people are just people that like to stay at home........ However, that's just been my travels across the states, I can't speak for anywhere else in the world at this point in time.

Actually, in a lot of my traveling, I rarely see Nikons in the wild. Most of the Canon dSLRs I see are the Rebels.

yea same here, i see more canon users here in the states from locals but the European tourtist i see are more nikon users
