Storage Compartment Removal
Hey guys, I'm looking to get a custom exhaust installed on my e90 lci. It currently has the stock 328i exhaust and what i want the custom shop to do is install an exhaust that looks like the 335i with a Magnaflow muffler. The shop is saying that the storage compartment that drops down in the trunk is going to get in the way of what i want done and may not be possible. Has anyone had experience with this problem? If so, what was your solution? Is there a replacement part for this storage compartment that does not drop down as deep or at all? All of your comments/suggestions are appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance!

If i'm not mistaken that compartment can very easily be removed without harming anything, it has no other purpose other than storage. I'm not sure if it's sealed with a simple gasket or seal or a permanent type, it's just screwed in place so remove it and check things out! Then just get a very nice peice of metal cut to the exact size and shape of the hole (paint it to prevent rust) and seal it up! Voila!! Lots of room now!

you need the m3 storage bin. It doesnt sit as deep as the 328 one does. Gives a few inches more for clearance for those doing custom exhausts like i did.

Not sure if this will help you but check it out even though I do see that you want a factory appearance.

I'm going to throw in here, just because I like digging into realOEM.com. I'm not real familiar with the 335i, but I've looked at them and they have two rear mufflers, which calls for a different trunk floor storage bin. Per realOEM.com the bin you need is P/N 41147120020, which is the more shallow bin as someone mentioned.
I'm not sure what changing to a custom exhaust using a magnaflow muffler entails (or the cost), but I would think, if you want to go with an OEM appearance you could convert over to the 335i exhaust from the downpipes back (maybe). I'm not sure if the downpipe exhaust flanges on the 328i are in the same location relative to the undercarriage that the flanges are on the 335i, since the exhaust system from the head back is totally different (i.e. turbos). But it seems to me, from a manufacturing perspective, BMW would keep the location of the downpipe ends for both exhaust systems in the same place. Just a thought. Good luck with the conversion. |

Theres plenty of space between the bin and the bumper to run a pipe. Plenty of N52 guys have done dual/quad exhausts that way (me included).

Great job...If I have seen this before I did mine. I would have done the same thing because I prefer to leave the stock muffler.
