Canon 1.4x TC III $425

At Amazon. Best price I've seen. I just grabbed one. After renting one last week I was pretty impressed with its capabilities when matched with the 400 f5.6.

have you tried it on a 70-200 before? I'm curious about real world performance with that. Been thinking about pulling the trigger. Might just have to rent one.

I have used it a lot on my 70-200 2.8 (Non IS) and have always been very happy with how it performed.

I'll grab some pics with it on my 70-200 f2.8 IS when I get it later this week. I rented one last week (the 1.4x TC III, that is) and it was far superior on my 400 5.6 to the Kenko 1.4x TC I have.

Sometimes i feel like this photography subforum is better than a lot of full on photography forums haha. You guys rock.

Except my bank account might hate me for this.

It pays to keep an eye on the Canon store for deals on refurbs. There was a 20% off coupon a few weeks back. As usual most desirable lenses were quickly out of stock, but the mark III converters were both available for ~$320 w/ free shipping.

Arrgghh. Head not communicating with fingers. Meant the Canon store (but had just been looking at an ad for the Boeing store). I've fixed the post and included a link to the Canon refurb site (though of course since there's no sale at the moment the prices aren't all that compelling).

Great "must have" piece at a great price.

I too was wondering about Boeing ... Maybe they figured, hey, get some parts for your 747 and a refurb lens or two while you're at it ...

Got mine today. Supposed to be cold but clear this weekend, so maybe I'll get down to the lake and see if the eagles will cooperate.

A murder of crows. Not the most exciting or rare birds, but they posed nicely while I was testing out my new 1.4x TC III with taped pins on my 400 5.6 and 6D. The AF is a bit slow and indecisive, but it seems to work. The killer is having to shoot at f8 and 1/640s in less than bright light. The ISO really creeps up and starts to steal detail. This is where IS would be a huge advantage.

The first one is excellent, but the second displays the classic crow image problem, no details in the blacks. You need to expose at like +1EV and raise the black levels in Raw conversion. You might try raising the blacks on this image to see if there are details in there. You can also raise Shadows or do a little of both.

And the first is ISO 8000 as opposed to 1600 on the second. I was more interested in how well the AF worked with the pins taped. It works fine on a sitting bird. If we get some sun tomorrow, I'll try it on the TVs if they're out sailing around.

I bought it at this price early in the year from samys camera. Decent price. Good TC for sure with my 400 5.6

Depending on the body you're using, you may struggle with it. On the 7D and lesser bodies, you'll need to tape the pins and it'll be slow. On the 5D MkIII, it should work without alteration, but considerably slower then you're used to. On the 1D X, life will be hunky-dory.

I can tell you it won't AF at all on the 7D even with pins taped. At least it doesn't on my 7D. It does AF on the 6D with pins taped, but slowly.

Interesting. It did work on my 7D, with pins taped, but I still wanted to throw it against a tree...

Maybe I need a better target. I couldn't get it to work, though. And even if it did on a really high contrast target, it'd be useless for most shots where there were trees in the background.
