NA 4 cylinder hybrid with electric motors and possibly front wheel drive? Why not electric power steering so that that the only steering feel is torque steer! Front wheel drive has no place on any modern car, it's a giant step backwards. This joint venture is just weak.

I'm hoping whatever offsrping comes out of this, it truly will be an awesome sports car and not a grand tourer like most of BMW's current cars are turning into.

Toyota did have some awesome sports car but the economy and lack of sales killed them. The MR2 Turbo and the Supra Sequential Turbo were awesome cars.

I would love to see the Supra resurected with in in-line 6 topping out at mid $40k. I'm still waiting for it. Bring back the MR2 Turbo and let that top out at about high $30k.

I don't care about this hybrid nonsense. Just make it with looks to die for, keep the price reasonable, make it with good quality material, great performance, and I'll be there.

The auto industry is getting waaaaaaaay too homogenized. It's getting to the point where if you want a pure manufacturer's car, you have to buy a Ferrari. It's a real shame, IMO.

What's next, a Mercedes-Hyundai?

In Asia the rumor we have is Toyota would like the turbo technology from BMW. Apparently BMW has something up its sleeves, and their twin scroll turbo isn't as easily made has it sounds. BMW wants Toyota's hybrid part of things, and Toyota has agreed and is going to sell their "first generation" of hybrid things, whatever that means. That's probably where the venture starts and probably where it'll end.

As for co-developing things like a Super Supra (sorry) it'd be nice but these projects will take way too long, of course I hope it can be shorter. I doubt BMW will release much information because Toyota is still a competitor, and I doubt BMW will hand over any serious blue prints because the only goal for Toyota/Lexus IS is to make something (actually exactly) like the 3 series (Toyota said it themselves earlier).... Anything halfway decent BMW will want a set of kidney in front, don't know how that's gonna play out with their new friends in Japan. Look at the BRZ Subaru pretty much made the car, and Toyota puts on the stickers (yeah they contributed but not as much).

I like Toyota, I like the Supra. They can make great cars, they have done it several times, and I think they can make it again. Saruman probably cast a spell on Toyota CEO before to stop him from further developing sports cars like MR2, Celica, Truino, (ok and the Paseo), and Supra (sure there's that cost/sales thing....). I am sorry the rumor we have here is not as much performance oriented, and I don't mind being completely wrong. Yes I think Honda and Toyota need to do something about that GTR while not being bugged down too much by 0-100 km/h times and circles around the Nurburgring but focus on driving experience, if possible. Sorry about not being able to shut it sooner ....

The M CEO guy said he can pull 185~200 hp easy out of one liter of engine without much lag, so he'e probably going to double that up with a hybrid anti-lag system. Imagine what 6 cylinder can bring you. (don't think they like the five cylinder layout, har har)

Toyota a BMW competitior? Didn't know BMW had fallen so low. I thought targeted customer was different and that no BMW customer would go over to Toyota however good it might be (Lexus for example).

What does Toyota want?

Turbo technology? No, they are better then BMW at that (Supra).
NA technology? No, they also are as good as BMW (maybe even better) at that (LFA). Chassis? No, they are as good as BMW (maybe even better) at that (LFA, GT86, IS-F 2013, IS 2014, GS 2013).
CF technology? Yes. Well, they have it, but they want to reduce costs, so that "LFA" could be more affordable.
Diesel technology? Yes. Because they want to increase their market in Europe, where most cars are diesel.

What does BMW want?
Hybrid-technology. It is the next thing in future, and the only way before full-electric cars, until battery technology improves.
Common sportscar chassis. Z4 is BMW's worst selling car, and BMW is all about sustainability. Building a sportscar dedicated platform is the best way of having compromisless base, while not skyrocketing development cost. What will be in common? Other than the chassis (not suspenssion fine-tuning) and the hybrid tech, nothing is the same. Different sheet metal, different interior, different engines, different suspenssion, different customer target. Toyota more performance, BMW more premium.

With respects to the guys at Motor-trend, the rendering looks more like what the BRZ concept might have looked like at one point.

I see more Toyota than BMW in this rendering, if I were a betting man, I would bet on it looking more BMW than Toyota. Well, at least I hope it does as I have never found Toyota's appealing, to Vanilla for my tastes.

Cheers!
