335 v. 528

Looking to get a sedan for frequent 500 mile trips as my daughters now live 500 miles away and all of my cars are 2 seaters for all intents and purposes. Girls are 14 and 15 now and are just too big to keep shoving into the back of 911s.

I found a 528 and 335. Color combos and options for me are as important as car, but I finally found ones that I like. Both are year old.

What are your thoughts, especially if you have or presently own both?

I'd go with the 528 for the room but if you want some extra power then the 335 is right for you. In your case, i would sacrifice the power for extra room and comfort, especially for those 500 mile trips

For 500 Mi trips, all things equal, I'd pick up the 528. Less chance of getting stranded.

On the other hand, for a long trip car I'd want all the creature comforts like sports seat, Satellite radio, premium sound, navigation, etc.

...don't get 6speed and M-pack unless you really want to make me jealous

Why stranded in the 335. I was concerned the turbos might not be reliable. No diesel. M5 is a beast. Is the 335 that bad even with the high pressure fuel pump issue apparently resolved? I had thought the 2.8 would be solid since its been around forever i some may different iterations.

Here is a thought. You drive a 911 a 528 once you get used to it you will tend to stretch its legs like the performance driver you really are, and trust me you will feel the 528 really feels like real pig. The 335 still may not match your 911, but there are this little things called TUUNES that will cure that right up, and they don't cost much. Mine would leave skid marks all over that 911, but I know I know, it may not be your thing.

Now the 335i will neeeeever match a 528 reliability wise, but they aint all bad trust me, and 500 miles nothing to worry about. You have to be one unlucky man to get stranded. Thats all I know. Pick your poison wisely.

As far as your speed and performance goes you have your coupes. On those 500 mile trips you wont be flooring it, pushing the car to its limits nor will you need all that power just to travel the 500 miles. I'd go with the 528i because of the space, comfort, and reliability. It'll definitely add balance to your garage IMO.

Sorry about typos. Typing on iPhone.

Is there that big of a difference in reliability. The Porsches gave been very solid. The biggest problem I had is little tail thing not going up at 74 and this lead to replacement of instrument cluster on 2 cars and the PCM navigation thing went out in 04. Not bad considering I put 84,000 hard and I mean hard miles on it.

Haha, I have killed 3 transmissions and an engine in my Elise. Warrnty repairs on that car exceeded the costs of it. I am kind if hard in cars.

Is the 335 that unreliable? It has warranty and all, but it can be a pain. I don't need a rocket and I won't drive this car too hard. I guess I am looking for best bang for buck since they cost the same. Intuitively, my brain tells me for same costs get the bigger more luxurious car if costs same. Then one can also say that the 335 must be that good if it costs the same as it's bigger brother.

I just don't have time to go test drive these and I live in a small beach community so I am buying car from Atlanta based on research and what looks good to me.

Totally agree with this. You have your other cars for speed and performance, if you really are buying this car for mostly long road trips, might as well get the bigger and more comfortable ride.

Thanks guys. I ended up getting the 528i. Thought I would be disappointed by the power. The BMW has exceeded my expectations. Looked better than photos, drove and rode better than I anticipated and attention to details is executed well. So many little things here and there that exude quality (be it knobs, door handle operation, or the silly shifter). Everything adds up nicely and compliments the nice driving characteristics of the car. I really did not expect to like it so much. Made a 5 hour jaunt last night and the car will serve its purpose of a kid totter and economincal cruiser perfectly for me.
